Many herbs grow well on a windowsill, especially those that stay compact and tolerate indoor conditions. The best choices are herbs that can handle moderate light, limited space, and regular harvesting.
Good windowsill herbs include basil, parsley, mint, chives, thyme, and oregano. These herbs do not need deep roots, stay relatively small, and can be harvested gradually. A bright south- or west-facing window usually provides enough light for steady growth during much of the year.
What you can often get away with on a windowsill is slower growth compared to grow lights. Herbs may grow more slowly in winter or during cloudy periods, but many will still survive and produce usable leaves if light is reasonable.
For more consistent results year-round, some people add a small grow light or switch to a smart garden, which provides steady light regardless of window direction. But for many homes, a bright windowsill is enough to start growing herbs successfully.
