About Dwarf Tomato ‘Veranda Red’ F1 (Solanum lycopersicum)
‘Veranda Red’ is an early dwarf F1 hybrid that was bred for small containers. It is one of the few tomatoes that does well in a 2-litre pot, and the plant stays at around 50 cm. Even so, a single plant gives you about 60–75 small red tomatoes of roughly 15 g each, and they are sweet and full of flavour.
It is a bush variety, so the plant does not need staking. It also has good resistance to Fusarium and Verticillium and some resistance to late blight, which makes it a forgiving choice if this is your first tomato.
Growing ‘Veranda Red’ Indoors and on the Balcony
Because the plant stays so compact, ‘Veranda Red’ is a good candidate for a tall smart garden. In a LetPot Senior or LetPot Max, where the light can be raised up to 76 cm, it has room to grow and fruit. Smaller smart gardens with a lower light are too tight for it, and there a 2-litre pot on a sunny windowsill or balcony is the better home.
Indoors the flowers need a little help, because there is no wind or insects to move the pollen. Once the plant blooms, give it a gentle shake or tap the flower trusses every few days so that more fruit sets. You will find more compact varieties among our dwarf tomato seeds.

Growing Tips
Sow in March and cover the tray with glass or film so the seeds germinate quickly and evenly. The growing medium should stay at 21–26 °C and the room at no less than 23 °C, so a warm spot really pays off at this stage. When the seedlings have 2–4 true leaves, move each one to its own pot.
Plants for the greenhouse or balcony go out only after the last frost. In a smart garden you can sow straight into the pods and let the lamp do the work. Keep the plants in full light, water regularly and pick the tomatoes as soon as they turn red.
